Heavy Sounds: Puremagnetik Label Showcase!

  • Brewbakers 48 Emerald St Keene, NH, 03431 United States (map)

Brooklyn-based label Puremagnetik brings its musical artists and collaborators to Nova Arts on for an evening of tape-infused lofi, lowercase sound design and glacial ambient soundscapes. Join us for 4 sets that include the helmsman of 12k records Taylor Deupree, the tape music master BlankFor.ms, ambient guitar trio Hotel Neon and Micah Frank & Chet Doxas perform the music of medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen.

Deupree is an accomplished sound artist whose recordings, rich with abstract atmospherics, have appeared on numerous record labels, and well as in site-specific installations at such institutions as the ICC (Tokyo, Japan) and the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (Yamaguchi, Japan). He started out, in the 1990s, making new noises that edged outward toward the fringes of techno, and in time he found his own path to follow. His music today emphasizes a hybrid of natural sounds and technological mediation. It’s marked by a deep attention to stillness, to an almost desperate near-silence. His passion for the studio as a recording instrument is paramount in his work, but there is no hint of digital idolatry. If anything, his music shows a marked attention to the aesthetics of error and the imperfect beauty of nature, to the short circuits not only in technological systems but in human perception.

Hotel Neon is the Philadelphia-based trio of Michael Tasselmyer, Andrew Tasselmyer, and Steven Kemner. Together they create music to get lost in: cavernous, reverberating guitars and synthesizers, matched with visual projections in an immersive audio/visual experience.

Since forming in early 2013, the group has released 9 full-length albums and several EPs. Hotel Neon has toured and collaborated with the likes of Benoit Pîoulard, The Sight Below, Simon Scott, and Marcus Fischer, filling everything from living rooms to cathedrals with their densely layered walls of sound.

New York based producers Micah Frank and Chet Doxas have worked together since 2018 when they converged on their debut ambient album All the Roads where upon its release became the #1 top-selling Bandcamp album for two weeks straight. Throughout 2019 the duo performed several ambient, tape and woodwind-infused live shows on the east coast. Most recently, they have embarked on a year-long project of researching, performing and documenting the works of the 12th Century luminary Hildegard von Bingen.

BlankFor.ms uses degraded tape loops and analog synthesizers to create sounds meant more for the body than the mind. AKA Tyler Gilmore, he has been a composer of chamber music ranging from jazz to modern classical. He lead Ninth+Lincoln, an orchestra that fuses big band sounds, 20th century symphonic influences and electronic textures. His music has been reviewed in DownBeat and performed by Jon Faddis’s Chicago Jazz Ensemble, The University of Northern Colorado Jazz Band I, and The Henry Mancini Institute Overture Orchestra, among others. His work is published by UNC Jazz Press and Minor Ninth Music.

His Puremagnetik release entitled Works for Tape and Piano has been described by Create Digital Music as "pushing each instrument to its most vulnerable place, the tape itself becoming an instrument, sounding almost as if at the point of a beautiful breakdown."

Doors at 7pm, with music to begin soon thereafter. All ages!!
