Cecilia Zabala w/ Alton Lathrop & Special Guest Zara Bode

  • Brewbakers 48 Emerald St Keene, NH, 03431 United States (map)

Cecilia Zabala of Buenos Aires, Argentina is a rising star on the global music scene. With 10 CDs and close to 20 years international touring experience to her credit, Zabala’s music embodies the deep soul of the acoustic guitar, from its Iberian and North African roots, to its versatility as a worldwide voice of modern musical expression.

Cecilia Zabala’s distinction as a performing artist is multi-dimensional. From a technical perspective, she is a master singer and instrumentalist, conservatory trained, and a respected guitar instructor in the cosmopolitan center of Buenos Aires. But her musical vision is far from staid. Her music bridges genres from the European classical guitar tradition to Brazilian bossa nova and MPB, from South American Nuevo Cancion to global jazz. Her music combines many elements of global folkloric music, in a synthesis that bridges so many styles and genres that it can fairly be described as “sui generis” or without comparison. In one respect, the essence of her artistic identity is as a singer songwriter, but with a distinctly poetic rather than narrative character. Her music is dreamlike, and steeped in the deep soul of her native Argentina.

In performance, whether solo or with an ensemble, Zabala is mesmerizing, from start to finish. As an instrumentalist, her performances are hypnotic. As a singer and presenter, she’s both seductive, and a bit of a sorceress, or as they say in Argentina, a “bruja”. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and in that regard, a visit to Zabala’s YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/user/zabalaceci , where one can find a deep treasure trove worth of music videos and live performances, is worth more than a thousand words spent trying to describe her music.

This concert at Nova Arts will be part of a whirlwind tour of select venues throughout New England, and concluding in Chicago and Madison WI, in the month of February 2023.

Keene, New Hampshire native Alton Lathrop began playing guitar at the age of ten. After two and a half decades of playing in various hard rock and heavy metal bands, he discovered the music of Django Reinhardt and began learning swing jazz guitar. He can be seen performing regularly with various Swing and Traditional Jazz bands in the Southern Vermont and New Hampshire area.

An accomplished vocalist, Zara Bode has showcased her immense versatility in performance venues across the globe. Zara has earned critical recognition as one half of the vintage honky-tonk group the Sweetback Sisters, as well as a soloist and composer. Zara is a sought-after vocal arranger and backup singer that performs effortlessly in various styles. Taking great care in always putting her audiences at ease.
